Problem At Lan
« on: August 28, 2007, 11:00:38 PM »
Every time i have a LAN we always have a problem with my router, It ether keeps cutting out or every time we hook up a switch to it, it stops working then when we un-hook the switch it works again, Idk what is it, I have a linksys, Im not to good with networking but, my network has been dubbed " Fail-Work " By many of my LAN members.

Could someone mabey tell me why this keeps happening?

Thanks

So when you disconnect the switch from the router the network works immediately?  Sounds like a wiring issue. Make sure you are using a good cable. Make sure it's not a crossover cable. Make sure you are connected to the switch's uplink port and not one of the regular ports. Make sure you don't have multiple connections to the same object.

I assume you are using the router more as a DHCP server than as a pathway to the internet. Make sure the router is set to dish out enough DHCP addresses to accommodate everyone at your LAN.

I think thats could be the problem, The wires we use are all brand new and we put them in the right ports, but my router might be having a bit of a traffic problem, sometimes we cant even play the same servers with out the thing flipping out on us. And then other time it just starts pull a Russian Roulette with are wireless connections as well.

Well, heres the thing. Your servers should be local. It's called a LOCAL area network party for a reason.

What kind of router is it?

You are connecting everyone to your switch, and then the switch to he router, and it drops out?  Thats a bit odd.  Normally that happens if you looped the connection (so the router or switch is connected to itself somehow) or if the router reaches is traffic output.  If your just using it to connect to game servers then that really shouldn't happen.

I dont know how comfortable you are with doing firmware upgrades, but you should update the firmware on the router.  You can use the base linksys one if you want, but the DD-WRT frimware is ALOT better.

What is weird is that the problem seems to only happen with select games. You never had a problem when we played anything that wasn't GunZ: The Duel. However, when playing that very game and more than one person is accessing a channel that you happen to be on as well, the entire connection fails.

Sounds like your settings down allow the wireless AP to change speeds and you have a different speed card then them.  I think syd had that problem with her mac book.
