In my opinion, Vista is a crapshoot as of now.
But, it's possible to return it to.. basically a stable XP base if you disable enough of the new services/features. I tested this out on a machine for a client, they were happy with their systems newfound responsiveness.
If we travel back in time, to when everyone was like "OMGZ WIN2000 LIVES FOREVER XP = DEVIL" And then XP became stable, usable and powerful. I mean, 2000 is still an awesome solid OS in my opinion. (At least SP4) but XP is now dominant. So, we'll see what the future holds, but as of right now... I'd highly recommend against using it.
