Laptop won't boot from CD

I'm on my last legs with this.

I'm fixing a friends computer.  It had a bad hdd so I replaced it.  I am trying to reinstall the OS but it refuses to boot from a CD.  I've tried both Windows and Linux boot discs, two separate CD drives, and a external USB CD drive with no luck.  The only thing I havent tried is booting from a flash drive.

Anyone have any suggestions?

You didn't really just ask that, right?

Yes I changed the BIOS boot order, and tried pressing the key to select boot device.

was there an OS install setting? some boards are really dumb and have that on there...

also, did you hire a psychiatrist to check and make sure it doesn't have a fear of optical drives? :P

I somehow made it work.

I used a bootable flash drive to see if it would boot from that with the CD drive removed.  It did.  Tried the CD again.  No dice.  Plugged in the USB with the disc still in the drive and it booted from the disc.  Weirdest thing ever.
