HallowLAN 2010 - Nightmare in Elmsford - FREE?
« on: June 09, 2010, 09:03:09 AM »
Hey yall,

Im debating throwing a LAN, free of charge, near Halloween.  Im not going to do it if we cant get more than 15 people because the amount of work required is a bit insane, is there still a will to LAN out there? Can people still dedicated a day to kick ass gaming?

Also, If it is free, would some people be willing to drive a little bit more so maybe I can find a nicer venue (one with internet lol)?

I'm in!

And with enough advanced notice I'm sure I can get spetz, crazy, and sly to come too.  Maybe more

Might be hard to book a room at the same place we've used before at this point in time being 1.5 months from Halloween, but you never know. I barely have time to see my family much less plan a LAN so don't look at me.

Well, I need to update the server sitting in my closet and I still have the 24 port under my desk, just need a decently working router of some kind for DHCP, unless we use the server for that. As far as the network is concerned, I think I have that under control.

Just need the supplies for the client systems (power strips and network cables), unless we make people supply their own but I think pop would rather not. Really, all we need is the place and we could drop and go.

I have TONS of network cables that that dude dropped off at one of the LANs. 24 port switch too, tho it might be only 10/100 but that's more than adequate (tho gigabit would be nice as a standard nowadays). The biggest thing we need in a router to the internet is command and control over ports/protocols to keep people from leeching bandwidth on non-essential crap. A dedicated 3G source for internet would be nice but I recall that not working well in the past.

well, let's hope that your 24 port isn't fried. I know the one I have works, shit, I'm using it. Gigabit would be nice but gaming doesn't come close or even hit's that need.

As for a firewall, there's the honor system. If the connection gets bottle necked, it's cut and no one gets to use it :P

Remember how many switches have been donated to our LANs, only to find out that they were fried?

I have got tons of gear, switches, servers, whatever for LANS but nobody showed enough interest in this when I asked so I never booked the room ;/
