The date is set for the release of the Boxee Beta.

On December 7th at 7pm we are going to have an unveiling event at the
Music Hall of Williamsburg. If you're in NYC it would be great if you
could attend (RSVP at http://bit.ly/boxeebetanyc).

In case you can't make it to the event you'll be able to tune in to a live stream (provided by LiveStream.com) at http://blog.boxee.tv
or directly on Boxee (we've worked with Cliqset to overlay messaging onto the stream so you'll be able to chat about Boxee
while you're watching Boxee on Boxee. woah.) We'll make a recommendation for this App on the day of the event.

At the event we will demo the new Beta, launch new applications and start
a 4-week early-access for users to test the Beta before we release it
to the public at CES on Jan 7th.

Sign up for early Beta access here: http://bit.ly/boxeebetaea

The Boxee Beta will look, feel and behave differently
from the Alpha. It takes into account many of the requests and feedback
we received from users over the past year.

The Beta will feature:

      - a completely re-designed look and feel
      - improved navigation across the platform to quickly and easily access entertainment
      - search for TV Shows and Movies on the Internet & on local hard drives / networks
      - queuing functionality to let you save things for later from the web
      - shortcuts for your favorite apps, movies, shows, etc.
      - and the proverbial "more"

In the meantime, we hope you can join us for the Beta release event,
either in person or virtually on Dec. 7th.

from wiki (you lazy fuck): "Boxee is a cross-platform freeware media center software with a 10-foot user interface and social networking features designed for the living-room TV."

It's actually coded from a branch of XBMC I believe with a different interface. I have played with it on my AppleTV but like the XMBC interface better for now. Will play with it more once it goes Gamma.

AppleTV is a media appliance that you can attach to your TV to watch downloaded TV shows, listen to music, show pictures, etc. IT can be hacked (software) to run XBMC and/or Boxee, plus a few other nifty little tricks. It's basically a slimmed down Mac Mini (as if the Mini could be slimmed down anymore - doesn't have a CD/DVD drive or bluetooth). Wireless network is built-in. Comes in 80 or 160 gig models.

Best $300 I've spent in recent memory.

fascist : a political theory advocating an authoritarian hierarchical government

You spend good money on apple products and they dictate with authority what you can and cannot do with them.  They always want to be in control of everything and their way is always right.

One companies sins does not absolve apple from their fascist ways.

To call apple fascist would imply that they want to force people to use what APPLE wants, not what the people want. If that were so I wouldn't be able to use Boxee and XBMC on my AppleTV. They would have locked out hacking altogether rather than give people the ability to modify the base code of the box at will. They also now let you run Windows (or hell, even Linux) on your Macs since going Intel (I believe you could run various flavors of Linux on the Motorola based Macs as well) instead of forcing you to use OSX or whatever cat it's called now a days.

Your evidence towards your argument kinda fails:

Just because Jobs wanted to keep some of his personal health matters out of the limelight doesn't mean they are operating under a veil of secrecy (although, admittedly, the health of a company's CEO does matter - so SOME information would be worthwhile). The blogger posts that Apple keeps the nature of what items it plans to reveal at MacWorld a secret. So what? Wouldn't it ruin the surprise (and sure, maybe also ruin Macworld attendance) if the items were revealed before hand?

Now. If you wanted some ammo to SUPPORT your argument, you should have posted THIS:

http://lightloch.com/2008/05/20/fruitful-fascism/

THEN maybe I'd start seeing it from your point of view (the whole Ipod bit does indeed make sense, and is one main reason why I WON'T use ipods for my music).

"To call apple fascist would imply that they want to force people to use what APPLE wants, not what the people want. "

Running anything that apple says is no good on your iphone, ilaptop, itoliet has a chance of bricking your device when apple decides it wants to update stuff.  This is fascism.  If i pay for something, I should be able to do what I want with it, as long as it breaks no laws or impedes anyone elses freedoms.  I should be able to load applications on my phone without the possibility of someone pushing an update out to intentionally brick it and then say "oh well, you ahd a non supported app, we arent going to fix it".

I worked for Apple under many realms within the retail market. Even though I'm a tad biased, (<3 APPLE), I can say that even though you may "brick" your device using third party unsanctioned software, it doesn't mean there isn't a way of fixing it, despite Apple's non-compliance.

I remember a couple of times where a few people would come in with jailbroken iPhones and the such, some of which who didn't even know their phone was even altered to begin with, since they must of bought it off the street, or had T-Mobile iPhone in mind. Me, myself, would notice this and I would gladdly assist them. Usually a simple DFU reboot and restore was all that they needed, and I would do it on one of the floor Macs. Nobody ever minded, or scolded me for helping them. You know why? We love our people, and I don't think thats fascist.
