Underclocking RAM
« on: October 17, 2009, 04:52:36 AM »
ok, so one of my dad's old co-workers asked me to look at his comp. it was having low virtual memory problems. so, for shits and giggles, i opened the thing up and looked at the memory thinking that i might have an extra stick laying around, lets see if its compatible. well, it turns out its a 256MB DDR2 400 and im like "well THERE'S your problem!"

now here's my question, the stick that i do have laying around is a 256MB DDR2 533. i already checked and the computer can handle 533mhz. if i put both sticks in to equal 512, would it be compatible at 533 or would i effectively be underclocking the 533 to 400 to get it to work?

i know the simple solution is to just buy new ram as it is dirt cheap, but its the weekend and it wouldn't ship till monday and arrive till wed/thurs had i done it.

Technical Specs here, if you want to see them.

Usually if you put in two sticks of RAM with two different speeds the system will automatically lower the speed of all RAM to that of the lowest speed chip.
