Can't boot from cd
« on: October 15, 2009, 04:35:35 PM »
I am having difficulty getting my desktop to boot from a disc.  I have tried everything I can think of, spare testing with another drive.  The drive simply doesn't spin up, and it generates an error saying the device isn't bootable.

Anyone have suggestions?

i would think that the motor is shot if it doesn't spin up at all. you check the power?

Well, normally I'd agree with GTC here.  However, does the spare drive do the same thing?  I can't imagine 2 drives are bad.  Did you change power plugs when you tried the spare drive or a new data cable?  One of the two might be bad.

from what i can tell, i don't think he has a spare drive handy, otherwise he would have tested that already. for the time being, check the cables as shell said.

Yeah, I didn't test with a spare drive yet.  Yes, power is good cause the drive opens and closes, and the IDE connection is good since it is detected in the BIOS.

My bad...I'm confused at what you said then...

Yeah, I didn't test with a spare drive yet. Yes, power is good cause the drive opens and closes, and the IDE connection is good since it is detected in the BIOS.

I thought you stated:
I am having difficulty getting my desktop to boot from a disc.  I have tried everything I can think of, spare testing with another drive.  The drive simply doesn't spin up, and it generates an error saying the device isn't bootable.

Why not try with another drive?

it sounds like the motor is shot. either way, you need a new drive weather to test or replace.

Try moving the drive to the secondary IDE chain? Might be a bad controller.

Turns out I have two bad cd drives.  My friend brought over a spare drive and it worked fine.  Guess my drive was bad.

I'm just gonna junk it.

On another subject, anyone ever try installing OSx86 on VMware?  It crashes when I try using iDeneb.

OSx86 ?  Im not a huge fan of VMware to begin with, ITs waaay to bloated.  It gave me issues with a few 64 bit os's as well.  Switched to XenServer5.5 and have been happier then a pig in shit.

Well, VMware was free through my school, so I figured I'd try it.
