Weird Wireless Shinanigans
« on: August 11, 2009, 09:39:55 AM »
I keep losing my internet IP address on my computer, and I can't reconnect back to my wireless network, this only happens when my computer feels like it, but once I system restore back to a date prior to August 8, it sortof works, low connectivity, I checked my logs, nothing downloaded, just very strange. Any thoughts?

how old is the wireless card? i know it's weird but I've found that some cards tend to die after a long time of usage.

It's a wireless USB adapter, probably like 2 years, and my sister can't connect either. I reset the router, no change.

Maybe the router is on its way out then?

I've gone through 3 routers, various reasons. If everyone is having similar problems, then that's prolly the cause. The way I see it, you have two options, figure out whats wrong with it and replace the router, or replace the router w/o the headache of trying to figure it out.

I also have a WRE54G range extender connected, when I unplugged that, and replugged it, it works, but now I have shitty coverage, so I gotta fix that, at least I isolated the problem.

yea, linksys routers, from my personal experiences, tend to die faster than other routers. so, i wouldn't rule out age, just yet.

The WRE54G is a range extender, pretty nifty actually, but the problem seems to have resolved itself, yay?

see the thing is, and I've learned this from noodle recently, that antennae need to be tuned to the transmitter. in this case, there's the possibility that the router isn't outputting what the antenna needs to effectively extend its range. so, its doing more harm than good. theoretically.....

I'm not sure if this will really work but try changing the channel on the wireless.

I find a lot of times a good flashing of the router works sometimes too. If your router supports it, get DD-WRT.
