Anyone with any experience?  While brainstorming with a couple of friends about my htpc idea and how I wanted to linux as it's more stable and would be a good learning experience, someone recommended me that linux dist.  All I want from my HTPC is:

-Store/play mp3s
-Watch/rip/(burn?) DVDs
-DVR capabilities (possibly)

Unfortunately cars are expensive but I plan on getting things little by little... :p  I'm looking to start off with 3x500gb or 3x750gbs in some sort of RAID 1 or variant (LRM)?  I'm not familar with the proper one that people recommend for Linux.  Offhand do people know some guides for a linux htpc?  Googled a few and got some information but anything is appreciated.

I'm not too knowledgeable myself when it comes to Linux.  But I have heard nothing but good things about Ubuntu.

I HATE UBUNTU.

I like root access when I need it.  I hate having to sudo every time i want to compile something, and i don't like their update system.

That said, ubuntu was not made for me, I am an advanced linux user and I am not their general market, which is probably why I hate it.

Gentoo ftw.

I love Ubuntu, not what I would run a server on, but definetely works good on my Sony S150 laptop :) ..

Also, I HATE having to "sudo" anytime I need some sort of super-user access.  Instead, as soon as I install Ubuntu, I run the command: "sudo passwd" which allows me to initialize the root user, give it a new password, and use it going foward.

Eh, you still gotta put your pasword in like every step of the way for updates and such.

I do updates from bash console while in su .
One command does all updates, all packages:
apt-get install updates

That's true, I don't compile updates.

But like I stated above, Ubuntu is not really a server OS, but is definetely, IMO, a good desktop replacement for Winblows OS assuming it is not your gaming desktop.  I love having it on my laptop.

Yea, gaming support on linux makes me ;( linux ;(

It is getting better, I can play most games now, if not native with wine.  Some copy protection schemes dont work, but copy protection is dumb in the first place.

Nope haven't even started!  I don't have any of the hardware yet, I'm aiming at the end of Q1 2008.  Going to get pieces little by little!

This topic confused the shit out of me
I know what Linux is
And I know what Ubuntu is
And I also know what Gentoo is.
But other than that.
