New Member - Looking for LAN Party Help
« on: December 21, 2008, 05:03:36 PM »
Sup all.

I am looking for a Few Good Admins to help me set up a regular (every other month) 1 day/2 day LAN Party at a Boarding school in Orange County NY.

I have a Gym, lots of couches, some Big Screen TV's and a Boarding school with a captive student body of about 180 students. In addition, we have a mechanism of providing snacks/drinks to everyone who comes, and can invite all comers from about 4 school districts and areas around western Orange County NY.

Anyone who wants to help organize this on a regular basis, please feel free to PM me, and we can open some talks.

I ESPECIALLY need Admins who can assess Electrical requirements of the bldgs we will hold the LAN Party in, and can provide Switches and Server boxes for the event. In return, if you own a busines (IT, Gaming, Consulting, etc, etc, I can offer free advertising to our student body and greater network of Alumni and Families throughout the U.S., South Korea, Europe and elsewhere.

If this sounds like you, drop me a line!

Thanks!

Welcome to the show.

What school are we talking about and whereabouts in Western Orange?
Do you want to do PC, console or a mix (guessing at least a mix since you want switches).
Is there internet access?
If it's a gym, then the power should most likely be adequate unless you are talking about a LOT of people.
How many people do you anticipate will attend?

School: We are located in Cornwall on Hudson, NY.

A mix of games. Some of the students already have PS3's, Wii's, and XBox 360's. We also have several Big Screen TV's, and a High Def Projector capable of throwing a 22'x12' picture on the Gym Wall. All the students have laptops and desktops and many already play LAN games on the school's intranet.

There is (or will be at the event) internet access. That would not be an issue to get it wired up.

The building is older, the administration is concerned about massive power requirements and the wiring. This has to be the first test that is done. If it is not capable of running the power needed, I can arrange for generators.

There are approximately 100+ students who expressed interest, and we have 4 high schools in the area, plus the greater hudson Valley community we can advertise to.

While I might say the first event is ONLY open to students of the school as a dress rehearsal to a larger event, I could accomodate upwards of 200 if I had to.

We also have a confirmed conduit for selling of snacks, food and drinks already available, so this is a non-issue for the event.

Oh, and as I said, if this event goes well, we could make this a quarterly or every other month event.

Oh, so you're in the east. I got confused as to what school we were talking about when you mentioned Western Orange county. Now that we know you go to Storm King, lets talk about power.

One of the BEST things you can do to keep power requirements down is to avoid CRTs like the plague. Most people have LCDs and laptops which is a good thing, but I'd make it a rule that no CRTs are allowed.

Your best bet is to go and test the power layout of the room you are going to be using. Make your own map and walk around the gym and see where the power outlets are. Since it's a gym, there is the possibility of having outlets in the floors as well as the walls, and maybe even coming down from the ceiling (tho that can be harder to access obviously).

Once you know where all the outlets are you need to figure out what outlets attach to what BREAKERS. Any good sized LAN party WILL pop a breaker or two (dozen). You need to know where the breakers are so you can 1) reset them and 2) know how to layout your power.

Go to Home depot and get one of THESE. Or if you are like most students and broke, get a portable lamp. Then get a buddy with a walkie talkie (if the breaker is in another room) or cell phone and start testing outlets to see which breaker they are on. Start with one outlet and start flipping switches until the light goes out. Note which switch runs that outlet on the map (they should have numbers next to them in the panel). Move to the next outlet, wash rinse repeat. The tester is handy for making sure the outlet is wired properly as well.

Since you are at a school I would suggest talking to the janitor/custodian before doing this to make sure you don't turn off the headmasters' hot water mid-shower.  ;D

Note on your map what breaker controls what outlets. Some older building might even require you to do a little of your own labelling on the breakers. Masking tape is your friend. You could even go so far (on or near the event) to label the outlets with colored masking tape to indicate which outlets are on what circuit.

Once you know what goes where, make note of how many AMPS the circuits you have available to you are rated for. This will be your primary means of knowing how much power you have to play with. 20-30 amp circuits are much more useful than 10-15 amps for multiple computers. Figure on approximately one computer per amp AT LEAST. You might need 2 amps for higher powered computers.

Ultimately the only way to know is to play around and test shit out.

I'd lay things out such that PCs are on a different circuit than your Consoles and TVs.

Cornwall ain't too far from me. I'm sure for some a free LAN party I could be convinced to come over and help out with setup and stuff. And for future LANs open to outsiders we could easily get a dozen or so people from here to come up and join you. :)

BTW, unless you didn't poke around the site much, you probably know we have a LAN coming up on Jan 3-4 in Elmsford. Come on down and see how we lay things out.

Welcome to the site.

Stuff to loan out! I was hoping I could entice some of you guys to just come on up and run the damn thing!

Kidding, of course, but my plan is to hold one or two small ones (for students only) then expand it gradually and make it a regular event open to all.

Hell yeah. I don't mind helping out with the running of it either. Setup and running is half the fun for me. I just wish I had more time to dedicate to advertising and gathering sponsors.

I think I can help with both of those...
