Building a new LAN machine
« on: October 29, 2008, 05:21:41 PM »
At somepoint before JANLAN I want to build a new LAN machine.  Ive picked out some basics but its been a few years since I built a machine and wanted some input.

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=9223492

I have two cases and two mobos on there because I cannot pick.  Neither mobo really does what I want (no onboard video, good sound card, at least 1 gig copper, sata raid 1) and all the other mobos come with like a hundred pci-e 2.0 ports which is totally not needed as I only plan to run one video card...

Please halp!

I LOVE my Gigabyte motherboard. Don't know much about the BioStars.

I've used Gigabyte as well and was very satisfied.  Never used Biostar.

Gigabyte makes excellent boards, as do Asus. Also recommendation if you're willing to wait, go for the shanghai processors. they shall be much more successful than the barcelona chips

I have to contest your assessment of Asus. They USED to make good boards. I've had way to many fail recently, as has Popsikle I believe, to consider them of good quality anymore. I used to be a real fanboy for Asus but their quality has just gone downhill in recent years. I doubt I'll be buying an Asus motherboard anytime in the near future. The major advantage to Asus is they DO have excellent customer support. RMA'ing a mobo can be a pain in the ass tho.

I would go for the Lian-Li
In terms of temperature, and case dynamics, with high end components, go with the lian-li.
However, in terms of processor, why not refrain from Phenom, and go dual core. No games use quad core, and it seems rather silly and extravagant. IMHO.

I only buy new parts once every 3-4 years ;)

Lian-Li's cases tend to be very overpriced for what they are.  Antec makes some good cases.

With the Asus boards, it depends on which one you get. usually like AMD said a long time ago, its a hit & miss w/ these things. BUT regardless, Gigabyte has retained their quality and has actually gone the extra step to continue giving excellent boards. BFG is ok, but in the end you'll probably end up buying a Gigabyte. Biostar makes ok boards, for gaming...not recommended. Don't get me wrong, they're ok boards...but knowing Pop, go for the good stuff. Antec still has made good quality cases, though they tend to buy them off other manufactures & just slap their name on it. Lian Li is WAY tooo expensive. its a great case, but i'd rather have something that will be more gentle on my pockets & still get close to the same quality.

BFG's motherboards are typically rebranded Chaintech, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.  I had their first mobo, based on the Nforce4 chipset, and it was excellent!

I cant find a nice small Antec case that I actually like.. At least no on newegg.  My fanboi status of Newegg is starting to falter big time as I can never find exactly what I am looking for anymore... What other good retail sites are there?
