Creating a Forum, how to?
« on: September 26, 2008, 05:42:07 AM »
I want to make a forum but I am not familiar with PHP.  Does anyone know of a easy to use bulletin board system that is free to use?  I know HTML but when it comes to anything else, like PHP or javascript I am a complete noob.

And if this does come to fruition how much bandwidth would be wise to pick up?

AMD, it does not use much at all, especially with as little traffic as we get ;p

FYI, I own a hosting company...............

If I grab the domain would you be willing to host?

I downloaded SMF, but I don't really know where to start.  Is it functional if I just stick the index.php into any website or does it require some modification to the code.  I am looking through the code in index.php, but I can't make heads or tails with it.

SMF is very intuitive and easy to use. Read the readme to get started. There is an installer I believe.

I read the read me and it seems simple.  However, before I go and buy the domain and server space I want to test it on my PC.  If I run the installer from my PC would it work like if it was on a server?

Did you want me to setup a domain and webspace for you to play around on? It doesn't cost anything to do. Can be like amdinside.dreamhosters.com or something. It's just a subdomain so no registration involved.

if you do it on your own system, you could set up appache and mySQL. here's a nice little package that i used once for a class, VERY easy to use and should be simple to set up. http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

Yeah, you could do it on your home system as well, then just direct your browser to 127.0.0.1. Or make it easy and make a bind for say "AMD.com" to redirect to 127.0.0.1 and you just enter that URL to go to your own local webserver. But I'll setup some webspace for you tonight. PM me your desired username and password for the FTP (remember, lowercase username - linux naming conventions) and I'll get it done ASAP.
