Open Source Networkable DVR?
« on: September 30, 2008, 10:29:26 AM »
Okay. Here is what I need. My wife has been bugging me for a DVR. The idea of getting a Tivo and paying whatever a month for a sub just to record shows turns me right off.

I torrent videos all the time. I want a box that will allow me to transfer the torrented videos to the box and then allow her to easily watch said video much like a DVR. Easy access, easy watch. No bullshit.

Ideas?

you use optimum, right? get one of their DVRs. $10 more, easy to use, go to the show, hit the record button on the remote, and you're good to go. just have to swap out your cable box, one box is better than two.

Or do what I do.  Buy a TV tuner for your PC.  One time fee, unlimited use.

I don't use optimum. I'm on basic comcast right now.

And AMD, remember I said simple. This is my wife we're talking about. She's not tech savvy in the least. She wouldn't know what to do with a PC Tuner.

I'm likely going to go the XBMC route and either buy a modded Xbox or do it myself.

I'll have to check that out. But it sounds like something that requires the "server" PC to be on and serving files. I wanted to try and avoid that. Nice thing about XBMC is that you can store media on an Xbox hard drive and play them locally. The MAJOR downside (which isn't that big a deal for me really) is that XBMC doesn't (can't due to Xbox hardware limitations) play HDTV files in HD resolutions. Best it can do is 720p I think.
