Netbook, worth it?
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:47:10 AM »
With me starting classes next week I have been considering picking up a netbook to use for class instead of lugging around my 15" laptop.  Does anyone here have a netbook (Eee PC, Acer one, MSI Wind) to share their experience?  Do you think it would be a waste to buy one?

I'd be looking to get the Acer One or Dell Inspiron 910.

I have an Eee and everywhere I go, people are like ooooh shiny and it looks like a toy, wtf!
On another note, I absolutely love it, I use it in class to take notes, and it does what it's designed to do, document work and web browsing, it's light, and the best part of it, was the cheapness, 250, and it's damn sturdy, recommend the Eee.

Sounds like it may be worthwhile to get one then.  Should I go Linux or XP?

Right now I am considering two variants of the Acer Aspire One.  This one and this one.  Which one do you think would fit my needs?

The big differentiating factor is the storage size.  8GB SSD vs. 120GB HDD.

So does that mean you recommend the 120GB?

I decided to pick up the Linux based One.  Sure it's only 8GB, but it's gonna mainly be used for school anyway, so I won't need a ton.  most finles will be stored on a flash drive anyway.  I found a place that sells the One for $289.  It's a lesser know online store so we'll see how it works out.  I payed with my AmEx so I can dispute it if the company doesn't come through.  Seeing as it is presently sold out on newegg, and costs $40 more I figured I give it a shot.

Well I have my Asus laptop for more demanding tasks.  The One is going to be used to take notes in class and browse the web on campus, so I don't need something crazy.

What site?

tigercomputertecs.com

Since they have a physical brick-and-mortar store location in Miami I figured it should be pretty reliable.

See my "first taste if identity theft" thread for the outcome of this.

After all that shit happened I wen't and bought the Aspire One from Newegg.  After all that hassle I think I deserved it.  I got it 2 days later and am VERY happy with it.  It is such a cool little device.  The Linux OS boots in 12 seconds flat and shuts down in 5.  Being Linux it is customizable to no end.  I have already replaced the background on the standard desktop. ( it isn't a normal linux desktop, so it isn't as easy as you would think)  I also replaced the included Firefox 2 with Firefox 3 (again, not so easy as other programs have dependencies on Firefox2 that can't be changed) and did some optimizations.
Anyone on the market for a netbook shouldn't be fooled by it's price.  it may be the cheapest netbook on the market but is very well built and does not appear cheap in the slightest.
