Recommend a Linux distro for a backup server
« on: July 22, 2008, 08:43:53 AM »
I got the go-ahead to build a PC to function as a backup server for a clients business.  I don't think he would want to spend the money to get Windows Server, so i am thinking of using a distro of Linux to perform the same functions.  All I want it for his 3 PC's to back up everything in the 'Documents and Settings' folders to this server, which will be running a RAID 1 array.  Is there one distro better than another to perform this functionality?

And if you know of a distro that can function similar to active directory I'd love you long time.

I read this article and am thinking I will follow that suggestion.  Unless anyone knows something better I will probably go this route.

The boards ate my poast.

I had suggested Centos5-latest beacuse it is a hell of alot more stable and durable then most of the other distros (except Gentoo, which is my preferred, but its not easy to use lol) and it has alot of support for shit built right in.

At my last job I used cent4 and followed something along these lines : http://pcquest.ciol.com/content/linux/2005/105010303.asp to get it done, the second time.  The first time I used a command line based howto and it got a little messy.  There are plenty of options out there for this.

I do not suggest you use ubuntu...  One of the guys here at work is an ubuntu dev  and he is always bitching about how the packagers and testers let everything slip and every new version of ubuntu is buggier then the last ;/

I'll look into Centos, thanks for stopping me before I ended up using a crappy OS.

I think we discussed this over AIM but you got CentOS installed with the onboard raid right?

Yes, I installed CentOS using the onboard RAID.  I just need to make sure windows can see the share I made in Samba before I implement it.

I ended up using Server 2008 Standard.  Seems to be working great, and it was free thanks to a Microsoft program that allowed me to download it cause of the college I am in.
