SMF spam help

My site that is using SMF 1.1.7 has been getting hit by more spammers than actual members.  Can anyone suggest a good way to improve security so I don't keep getting spammers?

Yeah, something is goofy. I've not had a single spammer on my site, ever. I had a lot on the family site but I took that down ages ago. Just restrict guests from doing much.

Turn on the questions and put some in like:

At night what color is the sky?
What goes moooooo?
What color is a school bus?
What room do you take a shower in?

etc...

I tried using an addon that asked "are you human?"  but it ended up breaking registration.  And I noticed that the letters that show during registration are always the same 5 characters and never change.

I'm not entirely sure but i think there's a server add on or something that makes the random letter thing work.
