My laptop computer got dropped while in my bag, and while everything aside from the USB ports (I think) works good, the light that makes text and the screen usable is dead and buried, if you tilt it and use it in the right light, it is usable, but the light everywhere else makes it useless, I just bought an Eee, but I wanted to know if it's fixable by any other means, i.e. go in, replace the light?

Sometimes it's possible to replace the screen/backlight. You need to see if you can get the part from the manufacturer, and find out if that really is the issue anyhow.
I'm guessing it's not under any kind of protection plan?

It's a dell Inspiron B130.
Dell said its 160 without a replacement lcd and 350+tax if it has to be replaced.

how bad do you want to keep the computer, otherwise, just get a new one and migrate over or even hook up a screen to it and use it as a desktop.

This is why I love my thinkpad. I've dropped the damn thing twice:
First time it did a belly flop LCD side DOWN onto a linoleum floor and worked fine afterwards.
Second time it landed corner down on asphalt. Again, still worked without flaw.
Both falls were 4 feet+.
My next laptop will mostlikely be a thinkpad as well.

If you go the route of getting an entirely new LCD, do not buy it from Dell. I have bought LCD's off ebay with no issues and they can be had for around $150.
