Okay that link there pretty much explains everything.
So WITHOUT reinstalling Windows as a first step, I went through some other options-

AVG 8.0 was installed and run (internet was still functioning) and it came up with it's issues and cleaned them.

After reboot, the same desktop scam came up and the internet no longer connected.

Next - Google suggested I look at Task manager Processes - But Task Manager is disabled, most likely by the virus I'm trying to clean. So somewhere

gave me suggestions on enabling - But none of the ones I tried worked.

Somewhere sent me to google's Spy Doctor, which I downloaded on my mac and then transferred via minidrive to the infected computer. It needs the internet to run - HAHAHAHA :/

So now I've got SpyDoctor and AVG and McAfee and Windows System something - The last two keep notifying me of shit I'd love to fix.

I have no problem reinstalling if thats the ONLY THING I CAN DO - Since as other WoWers know, it will only take about 72 hours.

plz halp.

thats beside the point, check out http://housecall65.trendmicro.com idk how far that will get you but it might work better since its scanning remotely, not locally on the computer. its going to take quite a bit of time to do so run it when you have a lot of time.

First off, run stuff from safe mode. If you need to, run safe mode with networking enabled. But start by running things like Avast in Safe Mode with networking disabled.

Disable all of windows' system restores. (Right Click "My Computer", Click Properties, and uncheck under the System Restore Tab). Viruses like to linger in these restore points. If you know how, and you are sure you don't need em, kill em. Especially since they are likely infected.

Are there multiple viruses involved or just one? If only one or a few, let me know names and I can see if I can gather clues on how to fix it.

Gimme time to look at the HJT log and I'll see what looks questionable.

i don't know how how recent your definition files for AVG are. an anti malware scanner is only as good as the dictionary it checks everything against.

Agree with GTC on the Avast > AVG. I've had things that AVG didn't detect that Avast picked up on right away. It's annoying because it nags you to "reregister" every 18 months, but it's worth the minor annoyance.

NOW. Regarding your internet. I suspect it works fine and it's just IE that is borked.

Open a command prompt. START->RUN->cmd.exe

Type "ping google.com" and see if you get a response. If nothing, type "ipconfig/all" and paste the response. There will be a gateway IP. "ping" that gateway IP and see if you get a response. If you can ping ANY IP outside your own computer, the the problem is most likely your browser. Hell "ping 127.0.0.1" just for shits and giggles if nothing else works. If THAT doesn't respond, then some of the networking services are likely disabled.

If your networking is fine, grab a copy of Firefox with your mac and install it and see if you can get internet with that.

And stab AOL with a spork.

AVG cleaned 20+ suspicious whatevers before I ran hijackthis for the posted log, so maybe that's why it looks okay. (not that its really "okay") -- GTC, the definitions are whatever I could get as of yesterday. I will go fetch Avast now and use my SuperMicroCruzer for data transport.

I will go see wtf I am doing over there on the PC and maybe possibly come back to ask the actual steps behind the word "kill." I hope it is ridiculously simple.

google's IP is 72.14.207.99. It can't find the destination cause it doesn't have access to the DNS. So ping the IP directly, bypassing the DNS: "ping 72.14.207.99" and see if it gets a response.

169.254.146.205 is an IP doled out by windows when it can't contact the DHCP server for configuration. Try doing an "ipconfig /renew" but I doubt it will work. I see wireless and assume that is what your primary access is. Do you have the ability to connect to a wired connection? If so, plug in and see if you can get an IP when you renew then.

By KILL I mean get rid of em. Hijackthis is fairly intuitive - check the box next to the item you want to get rid of, then hit the "fix checked" button. Viola.

The 169.254.x.x address indicates your being given a generic Microsoft IP address.  So your PC isn't able to get a valid IP from your router.  Sounds like it is messing with your TCP/IP settings, not just your browser.

Try booting into safe mode w/ networking and see if your able to get a valid IP that way.  It should be 192.168.x.x

It's fixed. The term "malicious dll file" came up on that other site, regarding my web issues - and after cleaning everything (PLZ*HOPE*PRAY) off, and finally that dll file with a few more awesome cleaners - all is well!

Cool. I was reading the thread over there and that guy definatly has a lot of practice at this. I shall have to check out the tools he uses as they seem to work very well.

What was the source of the malwar in the first place?
