Folding@Home
« on: February 10, 2008, 07:31:20 PM »
Now I don't know if anyone has heard of this before but here goes, there is this piece of software that uses idle computer power to help decode and fold proteins inside our bodies. Since we all tend to have ridiculously powerful machines, maybe we could all try and run this program when we're away torrenting something or whatnot. Anyway here's the link http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download
Please help out, if you can.

Other notable projects that use idle computer time for distributed computing:

yes
But how the hell does Seti@home actually work, explain that to me.
How does using our computers together help find extra terrestrial life?

Why don't you go ask them. Maybe in reality it's a front and they are really trying to break into banks and use you as an accomplice. :P

See, the satellites and stuff pick up more data per second then we can decode using any computers on earth.  SETI sends the same packets of data to 20 or so people and has then decode it then verifies all the returns are valid (by cross comparing with the other 19 peeps) then marks off those sections as done.  Its all about trying to keep up with the radio telescopes (which we still cant).

I'd rather use Folding@home.  I think it is more important to work towards curing incurable diseases here than worry about extraterrestrials.

Certainly makes sense to me. With our luck we'll make contact with an intelligent ET and it will just come and kill us all.

If you run both, you lose power for each individual thing.

Because if you run them both at the same time, you're not getting as much research per time if you ran one singularly, you're just wasting power by using 2x to get the same amount of calculations done.
