Am I just stupid? or is it vista

So here's my problem:  since about 4 days ago I haven't been able to connect to Xfire, Steam, WoW, or GuildWars....

BUT, my internet is fine.  I can use IE and whatever.  I can even download content (music, Xfire update, demo's, patches, etc.)

I just can't figure it out.  Recently, my IE went too, though my network said I was connected.  It happened after downloading and installing the Vista patch my computer told me to get.....(fcking M$) So I recovered from 2 days ago and now my internets work again, but still can't connect. 

anyone have any ideas????

check the built in firewall, it could be blocking ports or the apps themselves. second, ping servers, things could have gotten blocked somewhere along the line, you should find out where.

Haven't you tried FireFox? IE causes a lot of problems.

... and since you use no firewall. You might want to start using one. I had a similar problem, that if there was no Internet connection detected, I had to turn my firewall back on. The connection would return to its normal state.

It's possible Vista could be the problem. That's the beauty of it. You can blame that OS for anthing that happens to your computer.

Do you have AIM installed?  I was having tons of issues once that was installed.  I had to remove AIM and run a command from the command prompt.

nope. no aim.  and my internets are fine, IE works (it WAS a vista patch... idiots at M$ killed thier own program!!!)  its just xfire and whatnot that can't connect

Then it could be because there is no firewall detected. What's odd is that the lack of a firewall only effects certain, and not all, programs that require Internet connection.

i fixed it.  just uninstalled last weeks updates and turned off the UAC feature of vista...  now everything works ^_^
(the only thing that can't connect is ggpo ((if you still remember that)) but its still in beta so its probably just a general problem)
